Delayed response highlights Chatham County burglar alarm concerns

Leah Gross expected a swarm of metro police officers at her Southbridge home in western Chatham County last month when a burglar alarm activated.
Instead, she waited 45 minutes.

“However, that is the extreme exception and action has been taken by Chief (Michael) Berkow to help ensure incidents such as these are far and few between,” she said. “But they may happen depending on what is going on in our jurisdiction at a given time.”

Up to June 2 of this year, metro police dispatchers have taken 7,348 alarm calls, with an average response time of 6 minutes 34 seconds. The time varied on whether the call originated within city limits or in portions of unincorporated Chatham County.
